How the NHL wild card works
Eight teams from each conference make the playoffs. Six get in through their division, the top three in each, and the last two spots go to the wild cards: the two teams with the most points among everyone else in the conference, whatever their division.
In the East, the second wild card belongs to Toronto on 4 points from 4 games, level on points but ahead of Boston. In the West, the second wild card belongs to San Jose on 4 points from 3 games, level on points but ahead of Seattle.
Can a wild card team cross over to the other division?
Yes. In the first round, the division winner with the better record in each conference plays the second wild card, and the other division winner plays the first wild card. A wild card team can therefore land in the other division’s half of the bracket. The teams that finish second and third in each division play each other.
How many points does it take?
Over the last five seasons, the lower of the two second wild cards finished with between 90 and 97 points from 82 games. With 84 games this season, expect the bar to sit a point or two higher.
What decides the last spot?
The same tiebreakers as the full standings: points percentage, then regulation wins, regulation and overtime wins, total wins, head-to-head points, goal differential and goals scored.
