Who counts as an NHL rookie?
For the Calder Trophy, a rookie is a player who has not played more than 25 NHL regular-season games in any earlier season, nor six or more games in each of two earlier seasons, and who is under 26 on 15 September of his rookie season. Games in other major professional leagues count too.
This page uses a simpler rule that catches nearly every eligible player: fewer than 25 career NHL games before the season. The Calder’s exceptions are rare, mostly older players arriving from Europe. The race for the trophy is priced on the Calder Trophy market.
