Editorial standards
How Pucks & Stats reports, checks and corrects: sources, numbers, market coverage, bylines and the corrections policy.
Every number lives on a page
A figure in a story is a figure on the site: the box score, table or team page it came from, linked where it lives so you can check it.
Final means final
A game counts once it is final. Season lines are rebuilt after every final and checked against the league's official totals.
Our maths, shown
Expected goals, expected points and fair prices are our own calculations. The page says so, and the methodology sets out the formula.
Corrections in the open
Tell us about a wrong number and we fix it in the data store, so it is fixed on every page that uses it, and we say what changed.
Everything on Pucks & Stats starts from the numbers. These standards cover how we choose what to publish, how figures are checked, how we write about prediction markets and how we correct mistakes.
Sources
- Statistics, results, schedules, rosters and injuries come from official league data, stored once and used by every page.
- Market prices come directly from each venue we list. Every price module shows when the snapshot was taken and labels prices older than the refresh window as Delayed.
- We do not publish rumours, unnamed claims or numbers we cannot trace to the data on this site.
Checking the numbers
A game only counts once it is final. Team and player totals have to reconcile with the game-by-game data before a page uses them, and a story that quotes a figure links to the page where you can check it. Our own calculations, such as expected points, fair prices and implied chances, are explained on the methodology page, and the same formula is used everywhere.
Writing about markets
- A price is reported as a snapshot with its time, never as a prediction or a tip.
- “Best” means the cheapest price to buy Yes after venue fees. Commercial relationships never change it, or the order in which venues appear.
- We say when a sample is small, and we do not present a gap between a market and the table as a reason to trade.
- Every page with prices carries the risk and age notice and links to our responsible gaming page.
Bylines
News and analysis carry the byline of the staff writer who covers that beat, and each writer profile says what they cover and how they work. Game previews, recaps and the hub pages are generated from the data and carry the Pucks & Stats Data Desk byline; they pass the same automated checks before they publish.
Corrections
If something is wrong, we fix it. Tell us the page, the number and what you expected to see through the contact page.
- Data errors are corrected at the source, so the fix reaches every page that uses the number. We do not add a note to automated pages; they always show the current data.
- When a story contains a factual error, we correct it and add a dated correction note at the end saying what changed.
- Spelling, formatting and wording changes that do not alter the facts are made without a note.
- We aim to review every correction request within two working days.
Updates
Pages built on live data update after every final; the time of the last update is shown on the page. A story shows an Updated time only after a real edit to its text.
