NHL tracking stats

How fast NHL skaters move, how hard they shoot, how far they skate and where on the ice their shifts are spent, with every team ranked the same way.

SeasonSmall sample: teams average 3.3 games so far, so rate leaders move a lot from night to night.

Guide

What NHL tracking stats measure

Player and puck tracking records every skater’s speed and position many times a second. From it come numbers a box score cannot give: top skating speed and how often a player hits it, the speed of every shot, the distance a player covers and how much of his ice time is spent in each zone.

Tracking is available from 2021-22. Speed alone does not win games, so the most useful reads combine it with scoring: a forward with elite top speed and few chances may be skating into space that does not lead anywhere. Start with the fastest skaters and the hardest shots.
