NHL assist leaders 2026-27
Jack Eichel (VGK) leads with 8 assists in 4 games, 1 assist ahead of Connor McDavid (EDM). It is early: over a few games one big night can top the list.
How are assists credited?
Up to two assists are awarded on every goal, to the last teammates who touched the puck before the scorer, as long as the other team did not take control of it in between. Official scorers can change credit after the game when the video shows a different touch.
Why do defencemen rank high in assists?
Defencemen run the power play from the blue line and start most breakouts, so they collect plenty of second assists without scoring often. Compare playmakers with the points leaders and the defencemen report.
