Florida are 1.5 points above their goal difference

Expected points from goals for and against (GF^1.8 ÷ (GF^1.8 + GA^1.8) × 2 × GP × 1.115, the league's points a game). Teams above the line collected more points than their goal difference supports, usually through overtime and one-goal games.

Guide

How the NHL standings work

The 32 NHL teams play in two conferences of 16, each split into two divisions of eight. These standings update after every final of 2026-27 and order teams by points, with the league’s tiebreakers deciding ties.

How are points awarded?

A win is worth two points, whether it comes in regulation, overtime or a shootout. A loss in overtime or a shootout is worth one point, and a loss in regulation is worth none. That is why a record has three parts: wins, losses and overtime losses. NY Rangers lead the league at 4-1-0, 8 points from 5 games.

How are ties broken?

When teams are level on points, the one with the better points percentage goes first, which matters early in the season when clubs have played different numbers of games. Next come regulation wins, then regulation and overtime wins together, then total wins, then points in the games between the tied teams, then goal differential and finally goals scored. This table applies every step except the head-to-head points, which rarely come into play before the final weeks.

What is points percentage?

Points percentage is the share of the available points a team has taken: points divided by twice the games played. It is the fairest way to compare clubs with games in hand. A team with 10 points from 6 games (.833) is on a better pace than one with 11 from 9 (.611), even though it sits below it in the table.

Who makes the playoffs?

Sixteen teams, eight from each conference: the top three in every division, plus two wild cards per conference for the best records among the rest. The wild card standings show the race for those last spots, and the playoff bracket shows the first round if the season ended today.
