How to read NHL shot data
Every unblocked shot attempt this season, mapped by where it was taken and weighted by its chance of scoring. The rink is split into the crease, the slot, the wings, the point and the neutral zone: most goals come from the slot and the crease, most attempts from the wings and the point.
Teams that create chances in the slot and keep opponents out of theirs win more over a season than their record sometimes shows. For players, see expected goals; for goalies, save percentage by zone.
