The chase for 1,017

Washington has 75 games left. At last season’s rate, 32 goals in 82 games, Ovechkin needs about 26 games for 10 more, which would make it Washington’s 35th game, at home to Columbus on December 26. At the 0.52 goals a game of his last two seasons, it takes about 20, Washington’s 29th game, on December 10 in Seattle. At this season’s one goal in nine games he would finish the regular season on about 938, one short of Gretzky’s 1,016 in all.

Playoff goals count toward the combined total too, but Washington has to get there first. Our story on his farewell season has the long view, and the rest of the league’s scorers are on the goals leaderboard.

His final season

Ovechkin said on October 5 that this will be his last season. He turned 41 on September 17 and is playing on a one-year contract with a $4.25 million cap hit, 4.1% of the cap, which runs out at the end of the season. Every club’s contracts are on our cap space page.

Next up

Washington plays Buffalo at home on October 24 (the preview), then Philadelphia at home on October 28.

How we count

Goals are regular-season goals from our box scores, checked against his official career total. A shootout goal does not count, as in the league’s own scoring. Gretzky’s combined total is his 894 regular-season and 122 playoff goals. This page is updated after every Ovechkin goal, and the season line above updates on its own after every game.
