How the NHL trade tracker works
There have been 57 trades since June 1. Each card is one deal: the teams list a trade once each, and we put the two halves together so you see what every team got. Players link to their pages, with this season’s line and their contract.
How do NHL trades work?
A trade needs both teams and the league to sign off, and both rosters and payrolls must still fit under the salary cap afterwards. A team can keep up to half of a traded player’s cap hit, on at most three contracts at a time, which is how a contender fits in a big salary. Draft picks travel too, often with conditions attached, such as a pick that improves if the team reaches the playoffs.
When can teams trade?
Most of the year. The two pauses are the holiday roster freeze in late December and the stretch from the trade deadline in early March until after the playoffs, so most deals land in the days before the deadline and around the draft and free agency in late June and July.
What happens to a traded player's stats?
They stay with him. A player’s page shows his season for each club and in total, and his game log marks the game he changed teams.
