The numbers desk: scoring races, records, rookies and the draft, built from tables you can sort yourself.

Nora Halvorsen writes the numbers stories: scoring races, goalie lines, records, the rookie class and the draft. Most start from a sortable table on the stats pages and the question it raises, such as how unusual a start really is or how a rookie compares with the class before.
If you can sort the table and not find the same number, it does not go in the story.

When a figure is our own calculation, the story says how it was made and links the methodology. Small samples are labelled as small, and comparisons between seasons use the same number of games.

What every desk works to
Every number lives on a page
A figure in a story is a figure on the site: the box score, table or team page it came from, linked where it lives so you can check it.
Final means final
A game counts once it is final. Season lines are rebuilt after every final and checked against the league's official totals.
Our maths, shown
Expected goals, expected points and fair prices are our own calculations. The page says so, and the methodology sets out the formula.
Corrections in the open
Tell us about a wrong number and we fix it in the data store, so it is fixed on every page that uses it, and we say what changed.
The full rules are in our editorial standards; the formulas are in the methodology.
