How to judge an NHL goalie
Every goalie who has played this season, with his record, save percentage, goals-against average and shutouts. Across the league, goalies have a combined .890 save percentage this season.
Save percentage or goals-against average?
Save percentage, saves divided by shots on goal, is the better single number, because it measures the goalie’s own work. Goals-against average, goals allowed per 60 minutes, also depends on how many shots his team gives up. A goalie behind a good defence can post a low GAA with an ordinary save percentage.
What is goals saved above expected?
It compares the goals a goalie allowed with what the shots he faced would usually produce, given where they came from. Positive numbers mean he stopped more than expected. It is the fairest way to compare goalies on very different teams; see goals saved above expected.
Who starts tonight?
Teams rarely confirm their starter before the morning skate. Our expected starting goalies page estimates each start from recent starts, rest and back-to-backs.
