NHL signings: entry-level deals, extensions and free agents
Teams have announced 291 contracts since June 1. Most are depth and minor-league deals; the cap hit and term show next to the biggest new contracts, from our contract records.
How NHL contracts work
A player’s first NHL deal is an entry-level contract with a capped salary. When a contract ends, a player who is not yet 27 and has fewer than seven accrued seasons is usually a restricted free agent, so his team can match any offer; older or longer-serving players are unrestricted and can sign anywhere from July 1. A player in the last year of his contract can sign an extension from July 1 of that year. Under the agreement in force since September 15, 2026, new contracts run for at most seven years (eight was the limit before, so some deals signed earlier still run that long). Every team’s position is on the cap space page, and next summer’s class on free agents.
What is a professional tryout?
A tryout lets a veteran without a contract attend training camp and play preseason games. It pays nothing and counts for nothing against the cap, and it often ends in a one-year deal or a release before the season.
