Toronto has picked first overall three times since 1980: the Maple Leafs took Wendel Clark in 1985, Auston Matthews in 2016 and Gavin McKenna in June.

McKenna has played both of Toronto’s games so far. He has two shots and no points, at a little over fifteen minutes a night, and the Leafs split the two games.

The last first-overall pick to start in Toronto scored 40 goals and 69 points in 82 games as a rookie in 2016-17. Two games tell us almost nothing about whether McKenna follows that path; the page below fills in after every final.
