How the NHL Draft works
Every summer the 32 teams take turns choosing from that year’s eligible players over seven rounds. The order is set by the standings, with the worst teams picking first, and a team can trade its picks.
How does the draft lottery work?
The 16 teams that missed the playoffs enter the lottery, with the best odds for the teams with the fewest points. Two draws decide the first two picks, and a team can move up at most 10 places, so only the 11 teams with the best odds can win first overall. The rest of the first round follows the standings in reverse.
Who is eligible?
Players must turn 18 by 15 September of the draft year, and most picks are 18 or 19. A player who goes unpicked can enter again the following year.
When do picks reach the NHL?
A handful of top picks play in the NHL the season after they are drafted; most spend two to four more years in junior, college or Europe first. The draft history pages go back to 1980, and every pick links to his career where he made it.
