Team report →How NHL injury lists work
Right now 118 players are listed across 31 teams. Teams say little about injuries, often only “upper body” or “lower body”, so the listed return dates are estimates and move often.
Day-to-day, IR and LTIR: what is the difference?
Day-to-day means a player could return for any game. Injured reserve (IR) is for a player expected to miss at least a week; it frees his roster spot but not his cap hit. Long-term injured reserve (LTIR) is for a player expected to miss at least 10 games and 24 days, and it is the one that matters for the salary cap.
How does LTIR affect the salary cap?
A team can exceed the cap ceiling by up to the cap hit of a player on LTIR, to replace him while he is out. That is why some teams show negative cap space for weeks at a time. See every team’s position on the cap space page.
Who is starting in goal?
Goalie injuries change the most prices. The expected starting goalies page drops an injured goalie from its estimate as soon as he is listed.
